This has sparked many articles and entries in the records community regarding NARA, public access to public records and presidential libraries.

Office of Strategic Services (OSS) file request

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

Some information I forgot to include regarding the personnel files of the Office of Strategic Services and the newly released files. There has been a CD made of some of the more famous people who are documented in these files.

To obtain copies or request other material, you need to go to NARA’s College Park’s “Find & Request” webpage. From there, you need to create an account.

Unfortunately, I created an account on a Friday night and probably not receive an answer to my query until Monday at some point.  I will post with more details when I here back from them.

Second, it has come to my attention that there maybe a book relating to this called “The Lady Was A Spy,”  but I have not been able to find a location [online] that gives an overview of this title.  There are a few books with this title, yet no information as to fictional or non-fictional material.

There was an NPR interview done by Susan Stamberg in 2004 that can be downloaded, if one would like to listen to it.

Today in College Park, MD, personnel records from the Joint Chiefs of Staff will be released.  These records are from Office of Strategic Services (OSS) during the World War II era.  The OSS is now known as the CIA.  Among the files include people such as Allen Dulles and William Casey, famed chef Julia Child, Supreme Court Justice Arthur Goldberg, Arab/Israeli peace negotiator and civil rights advocate Ralph Bunche, and Hollywood actor Sterling Hayden.Allen Dulles and William Casey, famed chef Julia Child, Supreme Court Justice Arthur Goldberg, Arab/Israeli peace negotiator and civil rights advocate Ralph Bunche, and Hollywood actor Sterling Hayden.

More information on the press release and how/when to view the records can be found here.  The ARC record for the collection and other details can be found here
